Zangezur Copper and Molybdenum Combine (ZCMC) is Armenia’s largest mining company and one of the world’s top ten molybdenum producers.

We sought to convey the unique history of the company, its connection with the region and nature, emphasizing the national features, scale of production and contribution to the development of the community in the identity. The corporate website should demonstrate the importance of the company for the Armenian economy and the global mining industry.

Special Kudos. Best Innovation. UI design. UX design.

Task

Create a corporate website that will increase the transparency of the company’s activities, strengthen its reputation and demonstrate the high-tech nature of production. The website should comply with modern UX/UI design standards, emphasizing the company’s contribution to the regional development and its social initiatives.

Analytics and design

To develop the structure, we analyzed the market, the company’s business, its background and influence. We studied the history and production processes to highlight key aspects, build a logical narrative and systematize a large amount of information.

An international team of managers and analysts worked on the project.

For benchmarking, we used the best practices of leading mining companies such as Rio Tinto, Polymetal, Newmont, Nornickel, Severstal, Vale and Polyus. We also analyzed the websites of Webranking companies including SSAB, Outokumpu, Hydro and Anglo American.

As a result, we determined the main principles of content organization: division into blocks with clear navigation and user-friendly visual style. The structure included two-level drop-down menus, leading pages, breadcrumbs and shortcuts.

Idea and design approach

The design and identity are based on the company’s history, the natural landscape of the region and the Armenian national spirit. Visuals, photos and graphic elements emphasize the company’s connection with culture, economy and local community.

Design, digital identity
and UI-kit

Visual accents are created using a color palette of Armenian landscapes, texture frames, icons, noise textures and rock images. Animations, preloader, and parallax effects were added to make the design dynamic and interactive.

The project is implemented in three languages, with account for the fonts’ specifics. For the Armenian language, fonts reflecting the uniqueness of the national script were chosen. The headlines are made in Antiquan style, while the main text is written in modern font.

The design is based on the principles of Swiss layout: a strict, minimalistic and orderly structure is complemented by an abundance of free space.

The identity combines traditional Armenian patterns with photo style and infographics, emphasizing the company’s connection with the region and its cultural heritage.

Development. Frontend

For animations, we used GSAP and IntersectionObserver API. The history block is made with the help of synchronized sliders using Swiper library.

As you scroll the page, elements, such as mountains, move at different speeds, creating a parallax effect.

To visualize the company’s performance, we added an SVG animation of the ore productivity growth graph. The company’s values are highlighted using a chart that is animated through CSS, SVG and TypeScript.

The charts are animated using SVG images and CSS Animation. Property changes such as clip-path are used to create visual effects.

Widgets containing metal exchange rates and weather are powered by data from online services such as OpenWeatherMap. Google Maps is also integrated into the website. API requests include parameters such as city or metal type, and the resulting data is displayed in widgets.

Development. Backend

We used Pug and PHP to cut down on pure HTML work and speed up component integration. We also optimized content and resource loading to make the website as fast as possible.

Result

The new website emphasizes that the company is the largest employer in the region, one that maintains a stable social and economic situation. The developed identity combines respect for history and modern technologies.
